An Interview with Evan Marc Katz on Meghan Daum’s Unspeakable Podcast

I am a very fortunate man.

I get to be my own boss.

I spend my days helping women make better relationship choices that lead to lasting love.

I’m very happily married and actually like my wife and kids.

One of the other ways I’m lucky is that I’ve been a writer in LA for over 20 years. Even though I was never wildly successful, I’m one degree of separation from people who are.

Ready for Lasting Love?
Ready for Lasting Love?

I had my brush with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck when I wrote a script that finished in the Top 3 in HBO’s Project Greenlight in 2001.

I coached bestselling author Lori Gottlieb while she was writing her book “Marry Him” in 2010, before she became a national sensation with “Maybe You Should Talk to Someone.”

And through the magic of Facebook, I came to befriend writer and former LA Times columnist Meghan Daum.

I find her work to be fearless – a breath of fresh air in a climate where so many are afraid to speak their minds.

I’ve been a fan of hers for many years, and I find her work to be fearless – a breath of fresh air in a climate where so many are afraid to speak their minds.

So when she told me she wanted to interview me for her new Unspeakable Podcast and have me on after such luminaries as Dr. Drew and Chelsea Handler, I leapt at the chance.

Because while it is fun to make 5-minute videos about men who suck at texting, what I love even more is going deep. And Meghan really goes there.

During our interview, we covered:

DO YOU WANT TO FIX YOUR BROKEN MAN-PICKER?

  • The state of male/female relations and how that has affected my work.
  • Generational divides when it comes to sex/courtship/commitment., particularly how this might contribute to misunderstandings over sexual consent.
  • The idea of a “man shortage” and the degree to which this has to do with feminism and women “overtaking” men so that educated, successful women are competing for a tiny pool of equal-or-higher status men.
  • What happens to the men who are left behind and whether we’re talking about incels with enough subtlety.

It’s really juicy stuff – and Meghan and I both love to tackle it head-on, with honesty and something that’s been lacking in our national dialogue: nuance.

There’s a lot more in there and I’m not sure how Meghan edited it, but I highly recommend that you take a listen and subscribe to the Unspeakable Podcast.

Warmest wishes and much love,

Your extremely fortunate friend,

Evan
